Before we even begin thinking about designing your software, we need to learn and gather evidence about your business and your users. During our Learning stage, we will conduct several Team Work Sessions with your team to really understand your business and goals for the software we will be designing. Then, we will conduct research on your users, competitors, and best-in-class features. Most importantly, we will get in the trenches with your users to interview them and observe their “day-in-the-life” because at the end of the day, we design the software for them — not us. Lastly, we will perform a Card Sort study so that we can design a navigation system based on your users’ mental models – not our own.
If you were a trial lawyer arguing a case in a courtroom, you would never tell the judge or jury “In my opinion, I feel my client is innocent”. No, you would present evidence that supports your argument. The same goes for designing software or a website. We all have opinions but we should never let our opinions drive our design decisions when we can gather evidence to help drive and support our decisions instead.
